John Dowland
1563 - 1626
English composer and lutenist. After his training in Oxford he was refused a farm post in 1594. Believing that his adopted Catholicism was the cause, he emigrated to Europe.
There he traveled a lot and took a job at the Danish court. In 1612, when his compositions had made him famous, he was finally appointed lutenist at the English court.
He published three collections of songs, including about 90 works for lute solo and about 80 lute songs, including "Come again, sweet love is now finally doing", "Flow my tears" and "Weep you no more, sad fountains".
His Lachrimae is a collection for viol and lute ensembles.
